The X-Files has always been a show that I would say, “yeah, I love that show!” but I had never really watched it in its entirety. I had seen many episodes, but I was no die-hard fan. Still, watching it from beginning to end was something I’ve always wanted to do.

As even the die-hard fans will tell you, the show had its ups and downs. The first three to four seasons were golden and had a certain magic to it. After that, things began to fall apart due to what many call (at least I do) The X-Files Effect. The X-Files Effect is what happens to shows when they get so convoluted that they lose sight of what they set out to do in the first place. Shows like Lost and Heroes are today’s shows that grace us with this “effect.” Typically, when a show reaches the “effect” they tend to end. The X-Files didn’t, however. The show continued so far past this “effect” that even its cast members began leaving the show because they were tired of doing it.

The show tried to rid itself of the effect it had created. It tried to pull a sort of purging act by killing off people and plots that had been dragged on for too long, and begin to focus on fresh plots. This, strangely, kind of worked. Once the new cast was well in place they suited the show perfectly. So much so that Chris Carter believed the show could go on for another 10 years. This of course didn’t happen, in fact it seems as though they didn’t realize the show was ending until the last three or four episodes. Have any of you actually seen the whole series? The finale is such a bum rushed attempt at solving and answering everything that you’re overwhelmed. About 98% of all questions asked during the run of the series make no appearance during the final season, but in the last episode everything is brought back and you finally learn The Truth (as the final episode is so conveniently titled).

As soon as the last scene is over and the credits roll you think, “wait, WHAT!?” The last episode was such a disappointment. I still recommend to people to watch the series because it is a roller coaster, just know that the end might not be what you expect. Yes, the truth that Mulder seeks is revealed, yes, you find out what happened to his sister, yes, you find out what big secret The Syndicate is keeping and what they were setting out to do. But it wasn’t enough and you’ll only know what I mean if you’ve watched it all.

Page 1
EXTERIOR HOTH — DAY
A little spy robot thingy zips through the atmosphere and crashes into the snowy planet below. That’s when Chewbacca shows up and blasts it away with his crossbow laser. He shakes his fury fist in the sky in triumph.

CHEWBACCA: “Raaaaawwwwr.”

A bundled up dude is mounted on a large white lama-like creature that kinda looks like a kangaroo with horns. He pulls off his snow googles to get a better look at Chewie examining some small wreckage.

LUKE: “Echo 4 to Echo 8…. Dude. Han. Do you read me?”

HAN: “Loud and clear, sunshine. What’s up my man?”

LUKE: “No readings out here, except whatever Chewy just blew up.”

HAN: “Whatever it was, it shouldn’t mess with a wookie.”

Page 23
EXTERIOR: DAGOBAH — YODA’S BACK YARD

Luke is doing a handstand with the Force and like lifting up these rocks and boxes and R2 with his mind.

YODA: Concentrate…feel the Force flow. Through the Force, crazy shit you will see.

Luke sees some bad stuff and totally freaks out.

LUKE: Dude! No way!

R2 and the rocks and the boxes crash to the ground and Luke totally biffs his handstand.

YODA: Again you screw up. Control you must learn.

LUKE: I saw…I saw an island in the clouds.

YODA: Mmm. Friends you have there.

LUKE: They were all messed up and like, in jail.

YODA: It is the island you see.

LUKE: Dude, are they dead?

YODA: Difficult to see. Always in motion is the island.

LUKE: I’ve got to get back to the island!

YODA: Nuts, are you? If you leave now, ass-kicking you will receive. Lose your hand you will. And suffer through Ewoks we all will. Relax. Hugo Calrissian and Chewy got this.

Check out the rest of the pages over at LostTVFans.com.

Take a look at these videos. They actually look decent. And if ABC is really planning on ordering four full seasons and truly end it at that point regardless of the ratings, things could be great. Side note, is that Juliette from Lost?

The finale came and went and I feel like finally we’re starting to get some answers. Answers to questions we’ve had for a long time. Who is Jacob? What was the statue all about? Why did Oceanic flight 815 crash, and why were those select people on the plane?

SPOILERS
The finale took an approach that I wasn’t expecting. The episode was focused mostly on Jacob and we see him present at every character’s turning point (e.g. Jack’s first operation, Locke’s fall, Sawyer’s parents wake). What I’m wondering is if Jacob somehow influenced them to end up on the island. I’m sure this is something we’ll find out next season, but I like where that’s going.

I think the only thing that left a bad aftertaste was “impostor” Locke. At the beginning of the episode we see Jacob and someone else who “would love to kill him” but for some reason can’t. They mention some kind of loophole which I’m guessing is the fact that someone else has to kill him, but that of course is left unanswered. If Jacob doesn’t age, why isn’t this other man in the same situation, and why can’t he kill him? Finding out that Locke has been dead all along, and that the Locke walking around is this other man left me with a confused blank stare on my face.

Jack, Sawyer, Kate, and the rest are as usual up to no good, trying to blow up a hydrogen bomb. I really didn’t know what to expect here. Will the blow it up? If they do, will they show us what happens afterwards or will that be the cliffhanger? I have mixed feelings about this. I like the fact that they blew it up, but I don’t like the fact that it was the cliffhanger. In my opinion it should have been the way the series ended, perhaps with some cheesy piano and slow motion shots of them arriving at LAX. It felt too much like the end of season 2 when Desmond turns the key and blows up the hatch. It sort of cleared the slate of any crap and it let the producers do whatever they wanted in season 3. I have a feeling this is the same case, in which season 6 is gonna be some crazy shit not having to abide by any the rules they’ve set and story lines they’ve started.

So the airplane with the new group of people that has crashed is pretty much filled with members of every tribe. We’ve got Others, regular passengers, time travelers, returnees stuck in the present, and who know what else. I’m looking forward to the Jacob story line though. I’ll leave you with the extremely vague teaser for season 6, and I’ll see you all in 2010.

So the third season is over and I just don't know what to make of this show anymore. As we all know season 1 rocked, and as we all know season 2 sucked. Season 3 however was a different beast. It had a big hole to climb out of in trying to recapture the fans they lost during the writers' strike, and they had to impress the suits over at NBC to make sure they could return for a fourth season. So how did it all pan out? Let's investigate.

Season 3 however was a different beast. It had a big hole to climb out of in trying to recapture the fans they lost during the writers’ strike, and they had to impress the suits over at NBC to make sure they could return for a fourth season. So how did it all pan out? Let’s investigate.

Season 3 began with strong ratings. Stronger than I would have thought considering the trash they spewed in season 2. Then something strange happened. Contrary to what the ratings showed (steady decline and bad reviews) I enjoyed the show more and more (read here). I thought that the end of Volume 3 and clearing the slate for the very dark volume 4 was superb and I was back in, man. In it to win it. Then it happened again. Things started to roll downhill again. I’m not sure what the writers were/are thinking, but making every character on the show a Petrelli IS NOT GOOD WRITING! I was honestly sick of that.

The season finale then rolls around and it was less than stellar. The second to last episode was a yawner. You can’t have a yawner leading to a season finale. Nathan’s death was awesome, I gotta say. That part I liked. But then tricking Sylar in thinking that HE is Nathan? C’mon…

Enter Volume 5. Here comes the cliffhanger; Sylar Nathan can fix clocks!! He’s remembering!! Oh no! I saw that coming a mile away. And Tracy’s liquidy return? No! Her death was awesome! Why would you take that away from us!? Picture this: Jack Bower in season 8 gets shot in the chest and dies a slow-enough death to spew some touching words. He dies, we cry. Three episodes he comes back and says, “man, good thing I was wearing that bullet-proof vest!” You don’t do that! I understand that Heroes has the ability to cheat death since these guys have super powers, but enough is enough. Next they’ll be able to bring back the real Nathan finding a Hero that can bring dead things back to life. Mark my words, it will happen.

Heroes is now in line to get renewed for another 18-20 episodes. That’s a long time for more things to get totally screwed.

This is my attempt at putting my thoughts together on what has been my favorite TV show for the past 7 years into words.

Seven years and 76 episodes later, it has come to an end. A friend of mine actually said that I should be put on suicide watch due to the withdrawals I’ll be going through in the next few weeks. I’ve been thinking about the finale and the series as a whole since the finale aired, and I couldn’t come up with a solid opinion about how I felt with the ending.

First of all, Day Break Pt. 2/3 had big shoes to fill. Throughout the series there have been many questions, story arcs, and plot points opened. The fact that many of these were left open until the very end made me a little suspicious about how they would handle it; there were simply too many loose ends to wrap up.

SPOILER ALERT!
I wanna start by going over a few things from the series finale. I wasn’t as happy with it as the masses seem to be and there are several reasons for it. I’m simply confused by the way they chose to handle many of the open questions. First of all, Earth. At the end of season 3 when we find out that Kara isn’t really dead, the camera pulls out and zooms in on Earth. How do we know it’s Earth? Well, take a look at this screen capture and tell me that that’s not Florida and Baja California:

Once they land on Earth they find out that it is nothing but a nuclear wasteland. They even find the Brooklyn Bridge. So what does the fleet do? They give it the finger and leave for a different home, wherever they can find it. Fast forward to the series finale and they find this thanks to Kara’s musical and mathematical skills:

Africa, Australia, etc. This earth is a primitive one. They decide to settle here and make a new life for themselves with the natives without technology. At the very end of the show we go 150,000 years into the future and are dropped in the middle of what is now the New York City we know. Did I miss something? Didn’t we already find NYC devastated on a different planet? If their point was to say that where we live now is the Earth they finally settled, why was there a Planet of the Apes moment in the first Earth? People I’ve talked to tell me that the first one wasn’t Earth, and that THIS one is… c’mon!

The biggest thing going on during this episode was the heroic rescue of Hera being held in the cylon colony near the black hole. This mission was pretty bad ass (my favorite being the one in Exodus Pt. 2 from New Caprica) and successful. What, may I ask, was the point of this black hole? Was it simply to protect the colony? And was the colony destroyed? We see a raptor nuking the thing to all hell, but we don’t actually see it fully destroyed. Did we see the end of the (bad) cylons?

Hera was obviously a huge plot point since the moment she was conceived. Towards the end of the series her role became increasingly prominent. So much so, that the fate of both the human and cylon races depended on her. Why that is, no one really knows. All we know is that she holds the key to everything. So after hundreds more die in what is undoubtedly the most epic rescue act the Galactica has ever pulled, after the cylon race is effectively wiped out, and after the Galactica itself is left pretty much in pieces, what happens then with Hera? Absolutely nothing. NOTHING!!! Why do they need Hera at all? Why should half the fleet sacrifice themselves for this kid? Yes, 150,000 years in the future in New York (sigh) we see breaking news of a body being found that is the oldest human-like body every found. I can only assume that it’s Hera, but wouldn’t that apply to everyone that was left from the fleet, not just Hera? Again, she we were told she was important for no reason.

As for Head Six and Head Baltar turning out to be angels, I just don’t know. I guess Head Six being an implant in Baltar’s head would have been too cliché, and making Baltar a cylon would have been expected, so making Head Six an angel was the lesser of 3 evils. Once Head Baltar came into Caprica Six’s head a couple of seasons ago I began to think something more complex was at play rather than simply brain implants. I loved that twist. However, in season 4, Baltar gets a visit from Head Baltar as well, and only to tell him that Tori was special and he should sleep with her like he does with every other girl. Then the expectation for a good explanation became so big that no matter what they did I would be disappointed. So angels they were. However, why do these two angels look like them, but Starbuck is an angel all on her own, without a Head Starbuck?

Starbuck is a whole different issue though. We find out that she really has been dead all along. However, she’s remained a key character throughout season 4. She’s interacted with everyone in the show. Why can they all see her, but not Head Six and Head Baltar if they’re all angels? I guess they’re angels and they can choose to be seen by whom they want. Was every answer we were given God? Most of them were. If you’re telling me that these three (Kara, Head Six, and Head Gaius) are angels, I don’t buy it. I could see Kara alone being an angel, but the other two were utterly useless. Come to think of it, a little side note, we’ve been told that Kara always had a purpose and that she was special. Was that purpose to become an angel? Hmm… And what about all that jive talk about Kara leading humanity to their end, and her being the harbinger of death?

I really liked the idea of the Opera House being Galactica. That was great, but the visions/real life montage made no sense. In the visions, they make it seem as tho Caprica Six and Baltar take Hera for themselves. When it actually happens, they grab Hera and don’t see Roslin or Athena running towards them so they simply close the door behind them. In the next scene, “Oh, hey guys, here’s your kid!”. Ok, so… what was the point of all those visions?

Sending the fleet off directly to the center of the sun was bad ass. And Anders? What a way to go man. A glorious exit to say the least. However, I don’t buy their random decision to rid the world of technology and bring their race back to the speared age at all. Laura’s death was heart-breaking if not tear-jerking. It was a moment that we’ve all expected since the mini-series years ago, and we’ve all wondered under what conditions she would pass. Bravo. They couldn’t have done it better. Cavil surely won the “what the frak!?” moment of the episode when he took his own life. And the fact that they ALMOST gave cylons resurrection but it all went to hell was a great way to break the cycle. If they would have actually gone through with it, it would’ve been way too predictable. But what ever happened to “Daniel”?

The last scene of the show I also felt was over the top. We’ve already been drilled throughout the entire show that “all of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again,” We don’t need to see another Baltar and another Six, wearing the same damn clothes, walking around NYC, 150,000 years later. And the montage of the robots at the end could’ve been avoided. C’mon guys, you’re beating a dead horse by now.

This brings me to the final burning question; what was the plan? All along we’ve been told that cylons had a master plan, at the same time we were told that God has a plan for all of us. So what were those plans? Was the plan for the cylons to breed a human and a cylon in order to have a child to dissect? They didn’t make that clear. And what was God’s plan for all of them? Was it to bring humanity back to basics on a new planet to start all over? They didn’t make that clear either.

I only point out these inconsistencies and loose ends because I wanted this finale to be perfect. In the end, I’m happy with where the characters and show ended up. BSG has taken me on one of the best TV roller coasters I’ve ever been on. I’ve loved every minute of BSG, even when the flaws have been obvious (I’m sorry to tell you, but it isn’t a perfect show, it just doesn’t happen on network or basic cable television). But I’ve never been as captivated by the characters in any other show, and no show has kept my interest and my devotion for so many years. Hats off to you, BSG, you were good.

On Tuesday, March 17th 2009, Ron Moore, the creator of the show and part of the lead cast participated in a talk at the United Nations during the Creative Community Outreach Initiative. The initiative was started last year by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as part of an effort to get the organization’s message out to more people. During this meeting, officials and cast alike watched clips from the acclaimed show and discussed moral relativism.

Here is part of what thrfeed.com posted:

“This organization was founded on a very basic idea. Unfortunately, an idea viewed by some these days as being its own science fiction,” said Craig Mokhiber, from the U.N.’s office of the high commissioner for human rights. “We have been accused of being a utopian organization. In fact, we see it as the only reasonable alternative to what will inevitably be, I think, a horrific dystopian society, the kind of thing that science fiction is so good at representing, the kind of world that we do see in ‘Battlestar Galactica.’”

“One of the tough things about the show is to constantly blur those distinctions — that really good people would do really horrible things and really horrible people would do good things,” creator Ron Moore said. “So we work very hard to get to a place where we never really wanted the audience to be comfortable with the idea that the Cylons could be redeemed … and likewise, humanity.”

For all the mutual agreement, at one point Mokhiber ethically slipped in the eyes of the show’s star, Edward James Olmos, when the U.N. rep dared to use the word “race.”

“You should have never invited me here,” Olmos said, voice rising. “I just heard one of the proliferative statements done by one of the great humanitarians: He’s really trying to organize and bring us together and use the word ‘race’ as if there is a Latino race, an Asian race, an indigenous race, a Caucasian race or a Latino race. … There’s only one race, and that is the human race, period.”

P.S. Was that Whoopi Goldberg?
