A few months back I reviewed ABC’s new alien thriller (reboot) V.

Things happen a little too fast, there’s no mystery as to who the Visitors are and what they look like (they make immediate contact), the characters are very two dimensional, and the special effects are on par with Stargate SG-1. It’s as if they tried to make a very good, stylized show, but simply didn’t try hard enough.

My problem started when I moved and changed my whole set up. I used to have my TV speakers linked up directly to my computer due to their proximity. After my move, however, I was forced to make my speakers TV-only. My Mac Pro was left speaker-less. I plugged in my MacBook to the speakers’ receiver, and since iTunes 9 I have been able to stream all of my music and videos directly to the TV and those nice speakers. However, I have very particular iTunes habits. I rely on smart playlists which most rely on their play count and play date. As nice as iTunes Home Sharing is, it doesn’t affect my music’s metadata, hence rendering my playlists useless.

Enter Airfoil. This application is amazing. The application is a two-parter. There’s Airfoil and Airfoil Speakers. Copy Airfoil Speakers to any Mac in your network, and Airfoil will see it as remote speakers. You can send audio to that other Mac from virtually any application; iTunes, Safari, QuickTime, RealPlayer, you name it.

It also has many little features that make your life a lot easier. By default Airfoil lets you control the volume level of each audio destination, which is awesome. But you can also link up the audio to your main system’s audio so that you can control the audio with your keyboard, rather than having to go back to Airfoil every time to adjust the volume.

The application costs just $25, but if you need something like this, that’s nothing. Make sure to give it a try. The demo version will stream audio for 10 minutes. Airfoil is available for both Mac and Windows.

FlashForward is quickly becoming a soup of random clues that are delivered too quickly for any of us to process. Shows like Lost (which this show is trying to be), at least for the first season, took things a bit slower and let us bask in the mystery for a while. Now I understand the predicament of potentially falling the habit of asking too many questions and not answering them (ahem… X FILES! LOST!), but if you give me a clue, give it at least a little time before you answer the question.

Half way through the last episode I thought, “maybe I’m really not that into this show.” I always get the feeling that it takes itself too seriously. Alias, for example, wasn’t a flawless show, but I still watched it because it was enjoyable and it didn’t promise to be something amazing. It didn’t take itself too seriously. FlashForward thinks it’s something profound. Right now it doesn’t know what it wants to be, semi-good show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, or a solid show that does. You can’t have both.

The show is assuming that its viewers are idiots reminding them of every flash forward every character saw every 4 minutes or so. Yes, I know that Agent Mark Benford saw himself in an office with lots of pictures and men were coming to kill him. You remind me about 6 times per episode. Can we move on?

I don’t know… I just don’t know. Also, the ratings have been tanking, and for good reason. I don’t think this show will last for very much longer.

Alien invasions are nothing new to sci-fi stories and film, but the vast majority of them depict mean aliens attacking inferior humans. Most of the time humans end up winning by some weird stroke of luck (Independence Day, et al).

**SPOILER WARNING**
What District 9 did, however, is show a different take on alien invasions. First of all, it was really not an “invasion” movie as it tried to be more a film about racism and events the likes of the early Nazi/WWII era concentration camps and the Japanese internment camps in the US after Pearl Harbor. The interesting thing was that the film made it more of a point to show the animal side in us rather than make us pity the aliens.

The film takes place 20 years after the aliens arrived in South Africa (Johannesburg to be exact). During which this dying race of aliens has been kept in an internment camp in horrible conditions, many of them starving, and violence throughout. The idea is definitely original and its take on alien technologies and action throughout were, to say the least, amazing. Overall I have to say I was quite entertained by the film, but it still had many imperfections.

The main character of the film is basically the only 3 dimensional character in the film. Humans as a whole are portrayed as evil, racist animals (which we are), and the aliens, which obviously surpass us in technology by thousands of years and therefore in intelligence as well, as simple creatures. The problem I had was that it tried so hard to be “deep” showing our animal side, but in the end every human character was a simple 2-dimensional mean guy. If that’s the route you wanna go, you gotta show me something with the aliens; personality, culture, whatever. But we get nothing. We get the same 2-dimensional characters that are dumb as a rock with the exception of the leader who is smarter than the bunch. Instead, we’re given a human “hero” that is weak, selfish, and quite moronic whom I end up not caring for in the smallest bit.

This “hero” was one of the most confusing characters and he’s pretty much the only one in the whole film. He begins as a dumb racist official whom we don’t care for, then the filmmakers try to make us feel sorry for him, then not so much again since he turns completely selfish, then again root for him to save the day, then not so much again…. then, yes? I’m sorry, but making a little tin flower for your cardboard wife won’t make me feel sorry for you. You’re in that situation because you’re a moron, and you deserve to be.

The film is also a bit confused in that it doesn’t know if it wants to be a mocumentary or fiction. It continuously blends between the two at times confusing me and making me think that there’s supposed to be a guy there filming, but no there isn’t. Then at the end it’s a full blown fiction film. Kind of strange.

I don’t mean to bash the film because it was very entertaining and like I said very creative. I only scrutinize it because I liked it quite a bit and just hoped that it would have been better. I have moderate hopes for the sequel.

The film was enjoyable with the usual twists one can expect from anything that Dan Brown writes. One can also expect certain things to simply not make the cut from the book since you can’t fit it all in 2hrs. (see every Harry Potter book). The tough call that a director has to make is what exactly does make the cut and what does not. In this case I thought that what didn’t make the cut was very important. They didn’t simply cut certain scenes, they cut entire characters. Remember the reporter that gets tips as to where the next murder will happen? Yeah, totally cut.

Aside from things like this the film was a bit too extreme. Even though da Vinci Code was ridiculous in its own way it was still a fun film to watch. This film was quite a bit over the top with everything from the twists to the special effects. I’m also getting a bit tired of Tom Hanks to be quite honest. Regardless, the film was a good rental and nothing more. If you’ve seen da Vinci Code and liked it you probably will enjoy this one as well.

Considering the poor trend that Nicolas Cage has gotten himself into lately (Ghost Rider, Next), his name hasn't exactly been considered a staple of quality. While Knowing isn't exactly his masterpiece, I was surprised to see that some thought had actually gone into the making of the film.

The film kicks off with a small elementary school making a time capsule that is to be opened 50 years later. Each kid from a certain class draws what they think the future will look like in the year 2009. A strange girl, instead of drawing a pretty picture of rockets and flying cars, draws an endless row of numbers that seem to be gibberish, but of course they’re not.

Fast-forward 50 years and the time capsule is being opened by Nicolas Cage’s son and fellow class. Of course Nicolas Cage ends up with this sheet of paper and begins to understand its meaning as events unravel. That was to be expected and isn’t why I was pleasantly surprised. The film takes a swing at the question “why are we here,” and it does it with style. As the film develops it drops easter eggs here and there relating to religion. I wasn’t really sure where it was going, I just knew I didn’t want it to end like Indy 4 and have aliens all over the place.

I, of course, was wrong and that’s pretty much what happens. But what it does along with that is to take many of the founding ideas of religion and give them a more-or-less “scientific” explanation; angels, Adam & Eve, God. It makes the point that thousands of years ago humans were too naive to understand certain phenomena they witnessed. We simply hadn’t evolved enough, and with a strange game of telephone over the last few thousand years, the events that took place back then became deified.

Again, this is by far not Nicolas Cage’s masterpiece, but it is worthy of your attention. Regardless of the fact that we have to make-believe that Nick Cage is a professor at MIT, I was still wondering what would happen next at every moment. It’s not as cheap of an attempt to draw an audience an many of his latest endeavors.

I was actually quite surprised with the show, mostly because I had no idea what to expect. The truth is, that being such an avid fan of Battlestar Galactica, I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t heard of the show until recently. From what I understand the show “failed” only because Fox decided to put no faith in the show. So they aired it on a weird night at a weird time. Of course ratings were low and things went nowhere.

The show revolves around 12 astronauts who are on their way to a distant planet in search of alien life. Until they reach a certain “go, no go” point they still have a chance to abort and head back to earth. Before they’re able to reach this point they’re told that there’s been a scientific discovery that earth won’t make it another 100 years. The 10-year mission at this point becomes all the more important. Will they find life? Will this intelligent life be able or willing to help them?

The show has a striking resemblance to Sunshine, the 2007 film by Danny Boyle. The music is (mostly) captivating, the imagery is great, and the special effects (even though there aren’t many) are great. The show “borrows” a particular plot twist from such great films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the ship’s computer begins to act up against the crew. In all honesty I hope they would have gone a different route. If they were gonna go as far as using an idea from other stories I would have gone the Solaris route. In fact, I saw so many resemblances to Sunshine that I think a blend of its conflict towards the end with the Solaris conflict would have worked better.

As Ain’t It Cool News reported recently, the Virtuality creators know that in order for this show to be successful it needs some substantial backing (network TV-style, not cable TV). So in an effort to get more funding for the show, they report that the show may be going international looking for sources of income.

The show has a lot of potential. I just hope that the creators are able to find the necessary funding and that Fox or another network picks it up. If Fox has learned from their (many) mistakes, they’ll let this show live.

If you’re not already familiar with the V universe here’s a little refresher. The series is about a race of aliens, the Visitors, that arrive to earth unexpectedly. They claim to be here only to replenish their resources, and in return they are willing to trade some of their technology and medical advances. Once all is said and done they would be on their merry. The plot thickens, of course, when we begin to learnt that the Visitors have a different agenda.

First off let me just say that I’m a huge sci-fi fan, and as many of you know a dangerously devoted fan of Battlestar Galactica. When I first saw a couple of the clips released online I wasn’t really sure what to make of it. The show seemed to be very stylized and has a strong cast, shows of this nature have huge potential to succeed (BSG), however, they also have huge potential to fail. A recent show that comes to mind is The 4400. A great idea which in the end was executed poorly.

V, unfortunately, falls under the latter category. It makes some terrible mistakes off the bat that instantly turn you off. The dialogue was also quite predictable. I found myself knowing exactly what characters would say ahead of time on several occasions.

It’s too bad really, because this could have been truly great. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Joel Gretsch (The 4400), David Richmond-Peck (BSG, The Day The Earth Stood Still), Scott Wolf (Party of Five), Alan Tudyk (Firefly) and more.

The episode revolves around two key story lines; a couple of FBI agents (Mitchell, Tudyk) trying to track down a possible terrorist cell in NYC and the leader of the Visitors wrapping a major news reporter around her little finger to spread the V agenda.

The show will undoubtedly follow an underground resistance against the V which will be a long and difficult battle since the V are “everywhere”; government, religion, etc. They look human and even have human emotions. This was one aspect that I actually did like about the show. Not all V’s are baddies. Some have been here for a long time and are willing to help earthlings.

I’ll just have to keep waiting until something comes along that can fill the void BSG left after it ended.

Let’s face it. If it’s by Pixar most of us would go see it. Their latest concoction is one that blends action, tenderness, comedy, and so much more.

Just like pretty much all of their movies, the characters are superb. Each one developed to offer the right amount of whatever it is they provide; comedic relief, villainy, tenderness. Much like in Ratatouille, the villains have a soft side, and they’re not evil simply to be evil, and I love that.

I was so glad that the trailer to Up didn’t give away all the funny moments. Trust me when I say that almost every scene is funny, cute, or tender in its own way. This film is not Pixar’s best film to date, but it is a fantastic film worth seeing in the theaters. If you get a chance, check it out in 3D. Check out this classic scene:
