Google Latitude for the iPhone has finally launched, but not as a native app. Instead it came to us as a web app that takes advantage of the new mobile Safari's location-aware technologies.

I have to say when I first started using this app I was a little confused as to why I needed or would want to. It seemed silly to use it when I could just as easily launch my Maps app and have a nice, smooth native app to guide me around the city. Then I started to see the novelty, kind of.

The idea is that you can see your Google friends on a-la Loopt. First you request your friend’s permission to see them on the map and then, well… you’ll see them on the map. You also have the option to share your location, manually input a location, or not share it at all. Besides this the web app is basically the iPhone’s Map application on the web. I don’t see why they wouldn’t collaborate with Apple in this case and simply add it to the Maps application where the UI would me much smoother.

It’s got directions, traffic conditions (no, still no streets, only freeways), satellite view, turn-by-turn directions (no, not voice directions), and a few other gizmos.

I was checking out my Google Analytics recently, and noticed something new called Segments. I’m not sure how long this has been up, I only noticed it just now, but it does say that it’s in beta version. Segments will allow you to view not only the trend of visitors in the usual map, but several trends at the same time, each one with a different color. Not only that, for every trend that you choose, every part of Analytics will now reflect to show you each of those trends. It wouldn’t be very Google if they stopped there.

You can also add Smart Segments, which act very similar to Smart Playlists or Smart Mailboxes in OS X, which allows you to set criteria for the type of information you want to see, for example, below, out of a total of 550 visits, how many of them arrived after a certain hour of the day?

There’s plenty of rules to mess with, and once you’ve created your custom segment, you can save it and add it to your dashboard. This is the result:

Pretty amazing. If you’re not using Google Analytics yet, what are you waiting for?

Google has released a beta version of their Google Earth 5. To be honest I’m not sure what else an App like this could ever have. Check out this feature list:

Historical Imagery: It allows you view historical satellite imagery of different locations.
Ocean Floor: You can also go all the way down to the ocean floor, view shipwrecks (thx to BBC, National Geographic), 3D wave motion when tilting your point of view.
Environmental Information: Whale and fishing migration tracks.
Google Mars?: 3D terrain, High-Res images, Mars landers migration tracks…. on MARS.

There’s many more features, you just have to go and download this… like now. Oh yeah, and it’s free.
