I respect Blizzard for having such high quality standards. I really do. I can’t count the times that I get pissed off at a video game because of lousy controls, bad story, or horrible voice over. Blizzard has always made sure that their products are perfect before release to ensure the best possible experience for the gamer. But enough is enough.

First it was slated for a late 2009 release (we’ve been expecting this game since mid to late 2008), and now there’s talk of it not being ready until 2010. It’s one thing making a game good enough and perfect enough that everyone will love, but it’s another thing being totally OCD about it. What if they find some bug next month, are they gonna push the release date until late 2010? Then the graphics will be outdated. Will they have to redesign the entire thing?

Look, I love Blizzard and the games they release, but enough is enough.

I’ve been playing this game for a while now, and I gotta say it’s a lot of fun. Like every game, it’s got its pros and cons. So here it is, my review.

Pros: The game is very addicting and it’s very long. There are over 6 stages and each one takes 2 or more hours to complete. By the end of a stage, you’ve been playing for so long that you can’t make yourself start another stage, so the game will last you for weeks, if not months. The game is very inventive. Basically, the world has been stripped of its color by an evil ink army, and your mission is to color it again. The great thing about it is that each stage has many different challenges. So many so, that it’s almost impossible to finish a stage with a perfect score, yet another thing that makes this game last.
As you play and pass stages, mini games are unlocked. There is even a multiplayer mode. This game is definitely worth the money.

Cons: Some of the very things that make this game great end up hurting it in the long run. Like the saying goes, too much of anything is a bad thing. In this case, the controls and camera angels will drive you insane. The more color you collect, the bigger and slower you become. You have to collect paint points in order to color certain things. This, combined with things like jumping on walls and sticking to them (which has its advantages), getting stuck in little nooks and crannies on objects on the wall, and not being able to see yourself because of some awkward camera angle, becomes so increasingly annoying that I found myself shouting at the screen. I haven’t done this since I was 13.

By the end of a stage, your hand feels like it’s going to fall off. You make your character jump by quickly whipping your remote up. Combining this with other controls to squash baddies, getting stuck again on some wall when you meant to jump, makes you spastically try to jump making you look like you have some sort of disability. By the end of the game, you’ll feel like you do.

That said, the game is worth it.

Grade: B

This game is one of the most inventive and beautiful games made in recent history. World of Goo is a game where you control little balls of goo and build them up to reach a pipe and save them. The catch is that each level has a different minimum requirement of how many goo balls you have to save to advance, and each level has different paths you have to take to reach the pipe.

As you advance through the game you’re introduced to new ways of building your towers, including new types of goo balls that serve different purposes, and incredibly complex puzzles testing your IQ on how to reach your goal.

Each level has an OCD goal, which basically means, sure, you can pass the level with this bare minimum of goo balls rescued, but can you do it with THIS many?

Another thing that you would never expect from a game like this is that the entire game has a Tim Burton-inspired design to it and the music for this game is feature-film quality. If you want an example of the kind of graphics and music it’s got, watch the trailer here.

The game is available for the Wii, Mac, and PC. The controls for the Wii I would say are better than for a computer, and the Wii version let’s you play with up to four players. However, the computer versions let you submit your scores online… make your choice. The game is only $20, which is a steal.

Rating: A
