A few months back I reviewed ABC’s new alien thriller (reboot) V.

Things happen a little too fast, there’s no mystery as to who the Visitors are and what they look like (they make immediate contact), the characters are very two dimensional, and the special effects are on par with Stargate SG-1. It’s as if they tried to make a very good, stylized show, but simply didn’t try hard enough.

BSG: The Plan revolves around Brother Cavil and his experiences prior to the attacks and months after. Most of the film is focused on recapping what has already happened by showing you short scenes from key episodes, and then following the scene through to reveal something that we hadn’t seen before. The film is filled with “oh!” moments, but those “oh!” moments were for questions of the smallest magnitude that no one ever bothered to ask about.

Case in point, Sharon Valeri in season one seems to be hypnotized from time to time and keeps doing very Cylon-esque things. In The Plan we find out how and why… but who cares?

Edward James Olmos was quoted saying that once you watch The Plan you’ll want to go back and watch the entire series again with a whole new perspective. This is not the case. The only perspective it provides is the same scenes over and over again from a different point of view. Doral blowing himself up, the farm Starbuck was held in, etc.

At one point they almost had something going though. I wish they would have gone through with it. They suggested that some of these “sleeper agents” could be heroes in disguise who truly want to be human, hence Sharon Valeri failing to kill Adama… was it on purpose? It was an interesting question that sadly went nowhere.

I guess the really disappointing thing is that Battlestar Galactica was absolutely awesome. The questions they raised, the conflicts they presented, and the way plots evolved was nothing less than gorgeous. But in the end the show closes with many questions left unanswered leaving us shouting for more. And this is what they give us? it hurts me to no end giving BSG a bad review, trust me, I’m a die hard fan. But the lack of creativity in this final chapter of this long story is sad. In the end they do tell us what “The Plan” was, but as I’ve read in other reviews it is very anti-climactic.

What did you think about it?

FlashForward is quickly becoming a soup of random clues that are delivered too quickly for any of us to process. Shows like Lost (which this show is trying to be), at least for the first season, took things a bit slower and let us bask in the mystery for a while. Now I understand the predicament of potentially falling the habit of asking too many questions and not answering them (ahem… X FILES! LOST!), but if you give me a clue, give it at least a little time before you answer the question.

Half way through the last episode I thought, “maybe I’m really not that into this show.” I always get the feeling that it takes itself too seriously. Alias, for example, wasn’t a flawless show, but I still watched it because it was enjoyable and it didn’t promise to be something amazing. It didn’t take itself too seriously. FlashForward thinks it’s something profound. Right now it doesn’t know what it wants to be, semi-good show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, or a solid show that does. You can’t have both.

The show is assuming that its viewers are idiots reminding them of every flash forward every character saw every 4 minutes or so. Yes, I know that Agent Mark Benford saw himself in an office with lots of pictures and men were coming to kill him. You remind me about 6 times per episode. Can we move on?

I don’t know… I just don’t know. Also, the ratings have been tanking, and for good reason. I don’t think this show will last for very much longer.

First, the premise: everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds at the same time. During the blackout every person in the world has a unique dream. How, why, we don’t know.

I was a little taken back by how the show started; very Lost-like. However, the show was pretty good. FBI agents are called to solve the mystery of the blackouts. The interesting thing is that the dreams that everyone had at the same time weren’t just dreams, they were “flash forwards” of the future. As soon as I realized this I thought the show would suck, “here comes another 8 seasons of dreams and how they get to that point in the future.” I was then informed by a colleague that the writers have already planned five seasons and that by the end of the first season they would reach the flash forward that we’ve already seen. Thank you!!

You know, it’s really hard to plan ahead for network TV since it all depends on ratings. But if there was a show that could work on individual seasons it could potentially break the cycle of getting shitty after a couple of seasons and loosing its way. Could Flash Forward be it? I don’t know. It definitely has a lot of potential, but then again, lots of shows that have potential get cancelled (I loved Journeyman).

I’ll be watching the next few episodes for sure. It’s got a strong cast including Joseph Fiennes and “Penelope” from Lost (does this mean she won’t be in the final season of Lost?). Make sure to check it out, the season premiere is up on Hulu.

One of my biggest complaints with Heroes for the past couple of seasons has been the fact that it didn’t know where it was going, and when it did it went there with a sloppy attitude. There were too many plots, story lines, characters, twists. For the fourth season, however, the writers seem to have started a little slower and trying to take the show back to its roots.

We have a few lingering characters from the previous season, and we’ve been introduced to a some new ones (and I actually like them). What the show really needs is to slow down a little bit, and that’s why I kind of liked this premiere. Last season started off kind of weak, but as soon as the second half started it was badass. I’m hoping that in this season they try to focus on the few things that the show still has left; Peter, Sylar, Noah. Not only that, I’m hoping they make this season something meaningful. I’m tired of watching a bunch of people chasing a bunch of other people. I want there to be a common goal between humans and heroes. As Tracy Strauss put it, perhaps they don’t need to hunt them down, but find a way to help them.

We need the mystery of the show to come back. We don’t need cheesy one-liners, useless characters, and misguided plots. Bring back the Heroes we all know and love.

The X-Files has always been a show that I would say, “yeah, I love that show!” but I had never really watched it in its entirety. I had seen many episodes, but I was no die-hard fan. Still, watching it from beginning to end was something I’ve always wanted to do.

As even the die-hard fans will tell you, the show had its ups and downs. The first three to four seasons were golden and had a certain magic to it. After that, things began to fall apart due to what many call (at least I do) The X-Files Effect. The X-Files Effect is what happens to shows when they get so convoluted that they lose sight of what they set out to do in the first place. Shows like Lost and Heroes are today’s shows that grace us with this “effect.” Typically, when a show reaches the “effect” they tend to end. The X-Files didn’t, however. The show continued so far past this “effect” that even its cast members began leaving the show because they were tired of doing it.

The show tried to rid itself of the effect it had created. It tried to pull a sort of purging act by killing off people and plots that had been dragged on for too long, and begin to focus on fresh plots. This, strangely, kind of worked. Once the new cast was well in place they suited the show perfectly. So much so that Chris Carter believed the show could go on for another 10 years. This of course didn’t happen, in fact it seems as though they didn’t realize the show was ending until the last three or four episodes. Have any of you actually seen the whole series? The finale is such a bum rushed attempt at solving and answering everything that you’re overwhelmed. About 98% of all questions asked during the run of the series make no appearance during the final season, but in the last episode everything is brought back and you finally learn The Truth (as the final episode is so conveniently titled).

As soon as the last scene is over and the credits roll you think, “wait, WHAT!?” The last episode was such a disappointment. I still recommend to people to watch the series because it is a roller coaster, just know that the end might not be what you expect. Yes, the truth that Mulder seeks is revealed, yes, you find out what happened to his sister, yes, you find out what big secret The Syndicate is keeping and what they were setting out to do. But it wasn’t enough and you’ll only know what I mean if you’ve watched it all.

Doesn't it seem like almost every TV protagonist is named Jack? I don't know what it is about that name but people seem to love it. Funny thing is I don't think I've ever met a Jack in real life. Here's a list of the best Jack heroes on TV.

1. Jack Bauer (24)
Jack Bauer is the hero of heroes when it comes to television. He’s almost like a machine if you think about it, very two dimensional. Yes, he’s got issues, and yes he’s often conflicted. But in general he has no problem torturing a friend if he/she has what he needs to save the day. In fact, he’s a bit predictable when it comes to decision-making time. This, however, is why he’s the hero of heroes. He’s always trying to do the right thing, systematically, no matter what, and he often goes against orders to do the right thing.

2. Jack Shephard (Lost)
This guy I just sorta feel sorry for. Since the beginning of the show he’s always been the leader of the survivors of flight 815. Jack Shephard has always been struggling to do the right thing, but at the end of the day he almost always ends up doing something stupid that gets people in trouble. If you ask me there’s been a total role-reversal in the later seasons, making Sawyer or even Locke the hero. I get the feeling that all Jack wants to do now is chill out, lay out on the beach, and let other people worry about the problems.

3. Jack Donaghy (30 Rock)
Many people would say that Jack Donaghy isn’t exactly the hero, and that indeed Lemon should be classified as the hero here but I would beg to differ. Jack Donaghy is always there watching out for Lemon and making sure that she gets what she wants. Remember when Jack “promoted” the girl in accounting so that she would break up with the guy that Lemon liked? He’s always pulling stuff like that.

4. Jack Bristow (Alias)
A hero veiled in secrecy for almost the entire show. You always knew that he was hiding something, and at times they led us to believe that he indeed was the villain. Alas, he was not. I guess you could almost called him an anti-hero seeing as many times he had to do bad things to keep his daughter safe. I mean, how many people did he shoot at point blank range?

5. Jack O’Neill (Stargate SG1)
Jack O’Neill in the Stargate SG1 adaptation of the film always struck me as too much of a hero. He’s always a very good guy, he’s funny and witty, and he’s always doing the right thing. A bit of a disappointment if you ask me, considering the character that he’s based on. Jack O’Neill from the original Stargate film was a broken down army dude that lost his little boy due to an accident with his own gun. He joins the Stargate team because he has nothing to lose. Yes, the TV show Jack also lost a son, of course, but he doesn’t act like it.

Did I miss any?

I was actually quite surprised with the show, mostly because I had no idea what to expect. The truth is, that being such an avid fan of Battlestar Galactica, I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t heard of the show until recently. From what I understand the show “failed” only because Fox decided to put no faith in the show. So they aired it on a weird night at a weird time. Of course ratings were low and things went nowhere.

The show revolves around 12 astronauts who are on their way to a distant planet in search of alien life. Until they reach a certain “go, no go” point they still have a chance to abort and head back to earth. Before they’re able to reach this point they’re told that there’s been a scientific discovery that earth won’t make it another 100 years. The 10-year mission at this point becomes all the more important. Will they find life? Will this intelligent life be able or willing to help them?

The show has a striking resemblance to Sunshine, the 2007 film by Danny Boyle. The music is (mostly) captivating, the imagery is great, and the special effects (even though there aren’t many) are great. The show “borrows” a particular plot twist from such great films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the ship’s computer begins to act up against the crew. In all honesty I hope they would have gone a different route. If they were gonna go as far as using an idea from other stories I would have gone the Solaris route. In fact, I saw so many resemblances to Sunshine that I think a blend of its conflict towards the end with the Solaris conflict would have worked better.

As Ain’t It Cool News reported recently, the Virtuality creators know that in order for this show to be successful it needs some substantial backing (network TV-style, not cable TV). So in an effort to get more funding for the show, they report that the show may be going international looking for sources of income.

The show has a lot of potential. I just hope that the creators are able to find the necessary funding and that Fox or another network picks it up. If Fox has learned from their (many) mistakes, they’ll let this show live.

Here’s the synopsis:

Day One chronicles a global catastrophe from the perspective of the residents of a southern California apartment complex. In the wake of a mysterious event that has shattered lines of communication and (literally) changed the shape of the world, the survivors must work together to both rebuild and save the Earth from a menace that might have already consumed countless other worlds…

Here’s the trailer:

A buddy of mine who actually works for the show tells me that the computer graphics and music are all temporary. Since the show isn’t supposed to be out until January of next year, it gets me even more excited. As you may recall, this was one of the things that really turned me off from V.

If they can get the dialogue going a little better, improve on the graphics, and stay away from cliches, it has a chance at being successful. They will have some tough competition with V and Lost both starting in mid-season, so perhaps this will make them really invest in the show. Competition is always good for the consumer.

According to their sources from ILM the show will be shot in Australia and is said to be “of the highest quality.” I hope this means not only in the look of the series, but also of the content.

Sci-Fi has a short article confirming the rumors:

The quality and style of writing that will be used will be of the highest quality, and local writers will be sourced from outside traditional Science Fiction shows. Several big names within the Australian industry (including writers from the Award-winning Love My Way and the Award-winning Secret Life of Us) have been approached by Star Wars uber-producer, Rick McCallum.

Supposedly, unlike the cartoon series, this is meant to target older audiences, which is a welcome change of pace.
