I gotta say it looks like a lot of fun. However, there were no “holy shit” moments in the trailer, so I’m not sure what that means for the actual movie. The special effects are amazing. But with the things that they can do these days I was hoping for some kick ass time-stopping scene to really juice up all the PoP fans out there.

Check out the trailer over at IGN.

I found the female voice-over a little annoying after a while, but still, I dig it. I hope Donnie Darko can pull off the Persian Prince.

I’ve been excited for this film for years, and you know what happens when that’s the case… you’ll always be disappointed. What I have to do now is let go of any expectations and hope that’s enough to enjoy it.

Trailer-making is an art form that is often abused and bastardized (cough, cough, AVATAR!!!!…. cough). Every once in a while, however, you’ll get the really good ones like The Ring, Cloverfield, The Matrix, et al).

Case in point, Inception is one of the few teaser trailers in recent history that has truly captivated me while telling me nothing. First things first, watch it here:

Everything from the choice of imagery to the music is superb. I truly think that since good movies seem to be an endangered species, the least studios can do is provide teasers as good as this one. What are some other teasers you’ve loved?

I loved The Descent from the minute it began. I was fortunate enough to see the film with its original ending a few years back, which is from what I understand the European release. If you’re wondering what that ending is you’ll have to rent it. I was thoroughly happy with it and a sequel never even crossed my mind. That is until I saw the trailer for The Descent Part 2. When I first saw the title I thought “great, let’s ruin another great title!” But indeed I was surprised after doing a little reading. First of all we’ve got the main star from the first film back at it again, and the way that they’ve woven the two films makes me think it can work. Here’s the trailer:

James Cameron is nothing less than a pioneer. Terminator/T2 and Titanic speak volumes and have pushed filmmaking forward when it comes to special effects. But why were these films so groundbreaking? Just like Jurassic Park, you can’t tell the difference between real life and CG.

Avatar, as cool as exhilarating as it looks, is pure CG and noticeably so. I’m sure that he has reinvented the wheel when it comes to the many graphics technologies that he’s used to make this ($300 million) film. At the end of the day, however, it still looks like CG. I feel like I’m watching Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, a film that didn’t need to be a film. A simple 5 minutes would have been fine to show me the cool CG they made.

As far as the story of the film, it sounds intriguing enough for me to check it out, especially since it’ll be in 3D. I just hope that it isn’t just another film that’s cool to watch in 3D but has no substance. I know I’m going against the grain here and I’m probably gonna be bashed for talking down on the film, but know that I’m not. I’m simply stating that for the hype that this film has received and the price tag it’s got for producing it, I was expecting the second coming of CG. It simply isn’t.

Check out the trailer over at Apple.

The rise in prices for a movie ticket is nothing new. I remember paying for a $4.50 matinee showing in Culver City, CA about 13 years ago. Today I’m paying $10 or $11. I’m not sure how much of this is related to the economy since prices seem to go up no matter what its condition is.

When I asked for the two tickets the guy at the box office said, “That’s $24 dollars.” I of course proceeded to reply with the good ‘ol “oh, I’m a student” trick. His response? “Student prices are only on Thursdays.” I asked him if next year they’ll only be doing it only during full moons and smirked a bit, but he obviously didn’t get my joke since he just had a blank stare in his face. I know of a discount theater in Pasadena that used to charge $3 for their tickets, and as soon as the economy got bad they lowered their prices to $2 and have $1 hotdogs every day. Guess what? Business is booming, along with I’m sure all theaters of their kind.

Ticket prices greatly depend on the area that you live in. If you’re in Los Angeles or New York City you can bet your ass you’ll be paying over $11 for a ticket. Anywhere else you may get away paying $8, $7, or even $6 a ticket. Studios always make the argument that the reason is due to inflation, which is a total load.

I would call for a complete boycott of all films for an entire weekend as a passive protest, but I know no one would actually do it. Kind of like those gas boycotts that called for people to not fuel up on a specific day.

Alien invasions are nothing new to sci-fi stories and film, but the vast majority of them depict mean aliens attacking inferior humans. Most of the time humans end up winning by some weird stroke of luck (Independence Day, et al).

**SPOILER WARNING**
What District 9 did, however, is show a different take on alien invasions. First of all, it was really not an “invasion” movie as it tried to be more a film about racism and events the likes of the early Nazi/WWII era concentration camps and the Japanese internment camps in the US after Pearl Harbor. The interesting thing was that the film made it more of a point to show the animal side in us rather than make us pity the aliens.

The film takes place 20 years after the aliens arrived in South Africa (Johannesburg to be exact). During which this dying race of aliens has been kept in an internment camp in horrible conditions, many of them starving, and violence throughout. The idea is definitely original and its take on alien technologies and action throughout were, to say the least, amazing. Overall I have to say I was quite entertained by the film, but it still had many imperfections.

The main character of the film is basically the only 3 dimensional character in the film. Humans as a whole are portrayed as evil, racist animals (which we are), and the aliens, which obviously surpass us in technology by thousands of years and therefore in intelligence as well, as simple creatures. The problem I had was that it tried so hard to be “deep” showing our animal side, but in the end every human character was a simple 2-dimensional mean guy. If that’s the route you wanna go, you gotta show me something with the aliens; personality, culture, whatever. But we get nothing. We get the same 2-dimensional characters that are dumb as a rock with the exception of the leader who is smarter than the bunch. Instead, we’re given a human “hero” that is weak, selfish, and quite moronic whom I end up not caring for in the smallest bit.

This “hero” was one of the most confusing characters and he’s pretty much the only one in the whole film. He begins as a dumb racist official whom we don’t care for, then the filmmakers try to make us feel sorry for him, then not so much again since he turns completely selfish, then again root for him to save the day, then not so much again…. then, yes? I’m sorry, but making a little tin flower for your cardboard wife won’t make me feel sorry for you. You’re in that situation because you’re a moron, and you deserve to be.

The film is also a bit confused in that it doesn’t know if it wants to be a mocumentary or fiction. It continuously blends between the two at times confusing me and making me think that there’s supposed to be a guy there filming, but no there isn’t. Then at the end it’s a full blown fiction film. Kind of strange.

I don’t mean to bash the film because it was very entertaining and like I said very creative. I only scrutinize it because I liked it quite a bit and just hoped that it would have been better. I have moderate hopes for the sequel.

District 9 was an adaptation to Neill Blomkamp’s 6 minute short that he made in 2005. The film was made with a much smaller budget and the entire film is only a bit longer than the trailer for the new one, but still, it’s amazing how similar they are. Take a look.

With all of its rights and wrongs, after such a long and successful series of BSG, a film that is completely detached from the reboot is a hard pitch to sell. Variety has confirmed that Bryan Singer (Superman Returns, Valkyrie) is set to produce and direct the feature film. This is no coincidence as Bryan Singer has been interested in the project since before the turn of the decade.

As my readers know I’m a huge fan of the Ron Moore series reboot and have been since the start. So for those of you out there that are like me, how does this make you feel? What would it be like to see an entirely different Adama, or Starbuck? Will Starbuck remain a woman? Would Cylons have evolved to looked like humans in Singer’s universe?

Here’s my prediction. I bet this film will start us off at the first Cylon war with no human-like Cylons. Bryan Singer will try to not only capture BSG fans but also non-fans so he’s got to train everyone equally and introduce us to his BSG universe from scratch. It’s the only way to make the film successful. The film of course will end with a cliffhanger for potential sequels if in fact it is successful. But one thing we can’t expect is the whole “Cylons look like humans” thing. If he were to go this route fans would be up in arms for copying the idea and not casting the same people. It’s really too bad because the idea is great and it obviously worked like a charm.

I’m torn; the BSG fan in me is yelling and screaming because he loves the series so much and doesn’t want it tainted. The other side of me saying, “hey, who knows? This might actually kind of good.” The film isn’t set to come out until 2011 so we’ll have plenty of time to get over the BSG we know and love. What do you think about this whole fiasco?

The film was enjoyable with the usual twists one can expect from anything that Dan Brown writes. One can also expect certain things to simply not make the cut from the book since you can’t fit it all in 2hrs. (see every Harry Potter book). The tough call that a director has to make is what exactly does make the cut and what does not. In this case I thought that what didn’t make the cut was very important. They didn’t simply cut certain scenes, they cut entire characters. Remember the reporter that gets tips as to where the next murder will happen? Yeah, totally cut.

Aside from things like this the film was a bit too extreme. Even though da Vinci Code was ridiculous in its own way it was still a fun film to watch. This film was quite a bit over the top with everything from the twists to the special effects. I’m also getting a bit tired of Tom Hanks to be quite honest. Regardless, the film was a good rental and nothing more. If you’ve seen da Vinci Code and liked it you probably will enjoy this one as well.
