I’ve tried quite a few different plugins in my day to try to turn this site into a mobile browser-friendly site. Finally the right plugin has surfaced. WPTouch has actually been around for a bit and was recommended to me by a buddy of mine.

The installation is super easy; download the plugin and unzip, upload to your Wordpress plugins folder, and activate it from your admin page. If you have any other mobile plugins you may want to deactivate them because they could interfere. After that your done! All you have to do now is go to its settings page (it’s got its own page on the sidebar) and change the many options it gives you. You can even activate your Adsense account with it and get push notifications of new comments. Pretty nifty. If you wanna see a working example, navigate to Robot Forest on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Enjoy!

It’s actually quite simple. First, log in and go to your Settings > Discussions. There you’ll be able to enable threaded comments and how many levels of replies to allow. Next you’ll want to check to see if that’s all you needed to do, so simple head on over to a post with comments and see if a Reply link has been added. If not, open your header.php file and add the following line before wp_head

if ( is_singular() ) wp_enqueue_script( ‘comment-reply’ );

It should look something like this:

<?php if ( is_singular() ) wp_enqueue_script( ‘comment-reply’ ); wp_head(); ?>

After that you’re pretty much done. All you have to do now is theme your threads. Head on over to this site to do so:

This is an interesting concept. Design your entire website just how you like it in Photoshop, then use Divine to convert that PSD file into a full blown Wordpress theme. This comes especially handy for those that either hate coding CSS/PHP or simply don’t have the experience to do so.

Divine only works on Windows machines for now, so for those of you designing on a Mac you’ll simply have to wait it out.

How it works
Basically you’ll have to design your theme with fake text all over and exactly how you would like it to look. Once you get the design exactly how you like, you can open the file with Divine and assign each element in your design as a specific type; Post Title, Comments, Post Text, etc.

An interesting idea to say the least. If any of you get a chance to try this free product let me know what you think.

“This is the text that should show up to the right”

So what do quote boxes do? They emphasize a specific quote to draw the reader’s eye to it. Most publications will use this to single out one specific and representative quote of whatever interview they’re publishing.

The first thing you need to do is set up a class in your CSS. On this blog I’m doing something like this:

.bigquote {
float: right;
font-family: kokonor, Arial, Serif;
font-size: 1.25em;
background: none;
width: 150px;
border-top: #663366 1px solid;
border-bottom: #663366 1px solid;
margin-top: 1em;
margin-left: 1em;
margin-bottom: 1em;
padding: .7em;
color: #663366;
}

All we have left to do after that is write out the post and wrap any text we want in the class to emphasize it. Something like this <div class=”bigquote”>This is the text that should show up to the right</div>

There’s an amazing article over at Smashing Magazine on how to theme these even more.

1: Wordpress Category Posts
This is a very handy plugin. It allows you to add a widget to your sidebar that lists a user-defined amount of recent posts in a certain category. Best part is that you can add the widget multiple times to list more than one category on the side.

2: WP Polls
This plugin adds a very smooth and highly customizable AJAX poll to your blog. It’s got a widget to go along with it, and you can place polls anywhere on your site. Pretty nifty.

3: Feed Locations
This plugin is extremely helpful. It allows you to set the URL for your RSS feeds easily without having to mess with your template. Perfect for using Feed Burner.

4: YARPP (Yet Another Related Posts Plugin)
You can see this one in action at the bottom of every article. The amount of control you have with this plugin is ridiculous. You can set what aspects of posts to take into consideration regarding its relation (tags, body, category). Not only that, you can set how much weight to give each criteria.

5: WP125
Wanna advertise on your site like a pro? WP125 knows how to do it. You can upload your ads, set when they’ll go live, when they’ll be taken down, track how many clicks they generate, and more.

After recently redesigning Robot Forest Photography and having a fancy little “New” badge appear every time a new photo is posted it got me thinking how that worked. I went ahead and dissected the theme in order to find how this was being done.
It actually is quite simple to do, you’ll just need to add a few things to your Wordpress theme. The first thing you need to do is add a function to your Theme Functions PHP file, and it goes a little something like this:

function new_badge(){
if ( (time()-get_the_time(’U')) <= (3*86400) ) { // The number 3 is how many days to keep posts marked as new
echo ‘<div class=”new”></div>’;
}
}

Copy and paste that code somewhere in your functions.php file, and you’re almost there. The code will allow you to change how many days a post stays marked as “New” with your badge. Now that you’ve defined the function (and called it “new_badge”, but you can change that if you want, just make sure to change it when you call the function later on), we have two things left to do. You’ll notice that at the end of the code is a div class called “new.” This brings us to the next part, which is adding the proper CSS code. Open your style.css file and add this:

.new {
display: block;
position: absolute;
margin-left: 100px;
margin-top: -3px;
width: 50px;
height: 50px;
background: url(’images/NEWBADGE.gif’) no-repeat top left;
z-index: 100
}

You’ll need to make or find a badge you want to use, name it “newbadge.gif” and upload it to your images folder. What this CSS is doing is placing the badge right where you want it. So you’ll have to tweak this to work for you. Basically, the margin left and top place the badge where you want, and the width and height refers to the size of your badge.

You’re almost done! All you have left to do is actually call the function in your index.php file. Open that up and paste this small line of code where you want your badge to appear. This will most likely go somewhere inside your “posts” loop.

<?php new_badge() ?>

You’re done! To see a functioning demo, head on over to Robot Forest Photography. If there aren’t any “New” badges on any of the photos, that’s because nothing has been posted within three days of you reading this.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I’ve already implemented it onto my own photography website, though it is still a work in progress. I’ve only been at it a couple of hours. Check out the Smashing Magazine post for installation instructions!
