Avatar Teaser Trailer Is Up And I Have Lost Interest

Avatar has been one of the most anticipated and hyped films in recent history, and finally the teaser trailer has been released. I for one, am not that impressed and here’s why.

avatarJames Cameron is nothing less than a pioneer. Terminator/T2 and Titanic speak volumes and have pushed filmmaking forward when it comes to special effects. But why were these films so groundbreaking? Just like Jurassic Park, you can’t tell the difference between real life and CG.

Avatar, as cool as exhilarating as it looks, is pure CG and noticeably so. I’m sure that he has reinvented the wheel when it comes to the many graphics technologies that he’s used to make this ($300 million) film. At the end of the day, however, it still looks like CG. I feel like I’m watching Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, a film that didn’t need to be a film. A simple 5 minutes would have been fine to show me the cool CG they made.

As far as the story of the film, it sounds intriguing enough for me to check it out, especially since it’ll be in 3D. I just hope that it isn’t just another film that’s cool to watch in 3D but has no substance. I know I’m going against the grain here and I’m probably gonna be bashed for talking down on the film, but know that I’m not. I’m simply stating that for the hype that this film has received and the price tag it’s got for producing it, I was expecting the second coming of CG. It simply isn’t.

Check out the trailer over at Apple.

Just saw the teaser… very dissapointing, It’s OK, but not worth all the hype it generated.

  2. I couldn’t agree more. My post was summing up almost exactly what you said. How can you spend $300 million on a cg film? The Final Fantasy movie was made for so much less yet the quality looks as good if not better. Shame on Cameron. I hope it’s as good as everyone says it will be.

I don’t think it should be judged until it’s seen properly in 3D on an IMAX size screen the way Cameron intends it to be.

Short of his free screenings and Comic Con stuff there is no possible way watching the teaser on a computer screen or any way other than its intended viewing environment will do it justice. And teasers never tell anywhere near the scope. There was one line of dialogue in the teaser- “This is Great”

I’ve been reading up on and following this film’s hype for several years now and I have a feeling when you see the real thing you’ll have a different opinion. Read what Peter Jackson and Cameron had to say on the future of cinema at last month’s Comic Con.

BOOM!!!! $1 Billion in 15 days!!! I’m not going to say I told you so.
