If you’re a fan of the Ron Moore reboot of the classic, the first thing you have to do is not get your hopes up because it will have nothing to do with it.
With all of its rights and wrongs, after such a long and successful series of BSG, a film that is completely detached from the reboot is a hard pitch to sell. Variety has confirmed that Bryan Singer (Superman Returns, Valkyrie) is set to produce and direct the feature film. This is no coincidence as Bryan Singer has been interested in the project since before the turn of the decade.
As my readers know I’m a huge fan of the Ron Moore series reboot and have been since the start. So for those of you out there that are like me, how does this make you feel? What would it be like to see an entirely different Adama, or Starbuck? Will Starbuck remain a woman? Would Cylons have evolved to looked like humans in Singer’s universe?
Here’s my prediction. I bet this film will start us off at the first Cylon war with no human-like Cylons. Bryan Singer will try to not only capture BSG fans but also non-fans so he’s got to train everyone equally and introduce us to his BSG universe from scratch. It’s the only way to make the film successful. The film of course will end with a cliffhanger for potential sequels if in fact it is successful. But one thing we can’t expect is the whole “Cylons look like humans” thing. If he were to go this route fans would be up in arms for copying the idea and not casting the same people. It’s really too bad because the idea is great and it obviously worked like a charm.
I’m torn; the BSG fan in me is yelling and screaming because he loves the series so much and doesn’t want it tainted. The other side of me saying, “hey, who knows? This might actually kind of good.” The film isn’t set to come out until 2011 so we’ll have plenty of time to get over the BSG we know and love. What do you think about this whole fiasco?
