Google Latitude for the iPhone has finally launched, but not as a native app. Instead it came to us as a web app that takes advantage of the new mobile Safari’s location-aware technologies.
I have to say when I first started using this app I was a little confused as to why I needed or would want to. It seemed silly to use it when I could just as easily launch my Maps app and have a nice, smooth native app to guide me around the city. Then I started to see the novelty, kind of.
The idea is that you can see your Google friends on a-la Loopt. First you request your friend’s permission to see them on the map and then, well… you’ll see them on the map. You also have the option to share your location, manually input a location, or not share it at all. Besides this the web app is basically the iPhone’s Map application on the web. I don’t see why they wouldn’t collaborate with Apple in this case and simply add it to the Maps application where the UI would me much smoother.
It’s got directions, traffic conditions (no, still no streets, only freeways), satellite view, turn-by-turn directions (no, not voice directions), and a few other gizmos.
