iPhone vs. Jailbroken iPhone

For the first time in a long time I’ve jailbroken my iPhone. This time around it’s my brand new 3GS and here’s what I’ve noticed

First of all I have to say I was surprised as to how easy it was to do it. After I downloaded the iPhone 3.0 software the process took me about 5 minutes. After that it took me a few minutes to find out how to go about downloading all the iPhone apps I wanted for free and how download “unsolicited” software. Here’s where I ran into some shady things.

First of all, the process of downloading an app for free is almost seamless, but you feel really dirty doing it. You sorta feel like you’re downloading lots of torrents from really shady websites. A problem that I found is that since you’re not purchasing the apps iTunes doesn’t recognize them as valid apps, so iTunes will never back them up. If you restore your phone again you’ll have to redownload everything.

Here is what’s potentially very dangerous. Not only can you download (almost) any app you want for free, you can also download software to modify different aspects of the phone. This is old news, but the problem is that a lot of these modifications haven’t been tested on the 3.0 software. I downloaded a patch at one point which after it installed it crashed my phone. Not only that, when I rebooted it did so in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode I was able to uninstall the patch, but if I hadn’t been able to I would have had to restore my phone again.

Also, I have noticed, not an incredible difference, but a difference in speed nonetheless. I’ve noticed that my SMSs load slower and my email loads slower. Make your choice. Regardless, if you ever change your mind or if something goes wrong you can always restore again and go right back to normal.
