I’ve been working with iPhoto for the past couple of months and have grown to love some of its new features. The more I use it though, the more I realize I want.

The first thing I want is an improvement on Faces with Ages. If they get crazy with it they can do some insane facial recognition throughout a person’s lifetime. However, if they cheat, they could make it so that you set a person’s age while tagging their face. This would no doubt cut down on the technology needed. This way iPhoto is able to find the person no matter how old he/she is/was.

The second thing that has to be done is get rid of the “confirming” process after adding a face. Tagging someone in a photo leads you to the never-ending process of confirming photos of that person. If you’re lucky enough to finish, you can’t be sure you’ve got them all. In my case I know that I’ve got over a thousand photos of myself out of my 30,000 photos, but Faces has only found roughly 600. If it’s not perfect, for me it’s only a waste of time.

Places could also use some help. I would love to be able to add my own location coordinates for “landmarks”. There are several websites that will provide you with the latitude and longitude coordinates to an address, which could then be used to add custom locations (i.e. The Eiffel Tower, etc). Most major landmarks are in the list, but the list is limited. Can’t help to have some customizability. In fact, there IS a way to add your own locations/coordinates through the package contents of iPhoto (thanks to Joe’s Daily), which I will post a tutorial for shortly.

Personally I’m a huge fan of Places. That, and smart albums. I would love to have more flexibility when creating smart albums based on place instead of our options including the usual suspects (is, is not, contains, etc.). I would love to have choices like country is/is not, continent is/is not, state is/is not, etc. C’mon Apple, let’s think outside the box.

Also, on a random note, since we’ve got face recognition, could we have place recognition? Perhaps somehow integrated with Google Street View to recognize buildings and monuments? I’m sure this would be close to impossible since there could be thousands of buildings that look the same, but it’s a cool idea.

What would you like to see in the next iPhoto?

  1. I think it would be awesome if they implemented ages. You brought that to my attention today and didn’t think much of it until I read your article. Cool idea. Thanks for the plug also. Look forward to that article!
