This is a sad day for everyone. As of Friday, February 20, 2009, Hulu was removed from Boxee at the request of Hulu’s content partners. I was afraid of something like this happening, but it never seizes to surprise me at how clueless media companies are. People don’t just want content online, they want it easily accessible through a good and simple UI. Boxee offered this. I didn’t mind the advertisement in Hulu’s videos, that was the whole point. Free content for watching a couple of commercials. The only thing that this action will promote is more people torrenting these shows. They honestly just shot themselves in the foot.
So, in response to this ridiculous act, we resort to other means of perfect media setups. Something that’s been pretty hot in recent weeks, which of course is directly correlated to Boxee removing Hulu, is Understudy. This Front Row plugin will add Netflix and Hulu to your Front Row menu. It isn’t as straight forward as Boxee was, however. You’ll have to be logged in to your account with Safari, and add any shows you watch in Hulu to your queue. This is because Understudy actually takes the RSS feeds from your accounts and displays them for your in Front Row. Give that a try, and let me know how it works for you.
