CNN has written a typical nice long piece about the future of Lost. There are some luke-warm interviews with the show’s creators and some of the cast expressing they’re feelings about the new-found strategy to answer everything: time travel. As I read more and more of the piece, I couldn’t help but think, “haven’t I heard this before?” The truth is that we’ve been promised answers since around the end of season two’s abrupt ending with Libby getting shot through a pillow a couple of times, and half way through season three when people were asking, “so, wait, what the hell was she doing in the insane asylum with Hurley?” The issue here isn’t Libby; this just happens to be a sore spot for me in particular. The issue here is that the show has been X-Files-ized. The show gets too big for it’s own good leaving too many questions to answer and not enough time to do it in.
The article itself shows how even some the show’s primary characters aren’t too sure about the future of Lost and its spin towards Sci-Fi. Now, we’re being told that the remainder of the show will be spent answering questions that have burning our collective asses for so long. I think there’s something in there about H-Bombs being part of the answer, but all I see when they show me an H-Bomb hanging in the middle of nowhere is, “great… how long do we have to wait till we get an answer for this?” Again, they promise all the answers in the world by the end of the show, and again, the creators express that this season, season 5, is the best thing since sliced bread. I’m sure by the end of the show we’ll know what the smoke monster really is, who the hell is Jacob, how old Richard really is (and for that matter, our new friend Daniel Faraday), who was on the island first, what the Dharma Initiative has been doing all this time… I could go on forever.
What are your opinions on where “the show is going”?
