I’ve been playing around with the new iLife a little bit, particularly the new Faces feature. I’ve never seen anything like it. Here is what the actual procedure is like:
First, when you open the new iPhoto, Faces will begin scanning every single photo in your library for faces. If you’re like me and have quite a large library (25,000+), this will take about 5 hours. You won’t be able to use the Faces feature until this process is done.
Once it’s done, it’s amazing. I clicked on a picture of my girlfriend and tagged her. Next I went to find other photos with her in them. The first batch of photos which iPhoto guessed she was in were totally off. It asked, “is this her?” showing me photos of my cat and a bearded man. After you confirm a few more photos, however, Faces dramatically improves. One thing that I wasn’t expecting though, is that when you go to see the people you’ve tagged, and look at their photos, only the photos you’ve confirmed will be of that person. It will also show you other “maybes,” but you still have to go through all the photos and confirm.
As far as Places goes, super happy with this too. Not only can you set a place for a whole event, but you can also set places for individual photos, which is exactly what I was hoping for. My life is officially over.
